Default German Steel helmet with Copper plating

Hi, I'm new here...I have what I presume is a M40 helmet with no liner but interior stampings as is usual. However, the helmet has been plated with copper inside/outside. A magnet will stick to it so I assume there is steel in it. I found the plating after sanding the top layer of varnish??.If it is fake why the trouble of plating it?. Is this common for replicas?
