German steel helmets and the order on Abtarnung
Hello,
with the order on Abtarnung from August 1943 all german steel helmets had to be overpainted or the decal had to be removed. Is it possible that there was still attached decals on german helmets after August 1943 ? I am thinking of the army eagle for the Wehrmacht or SS decal for Waffen SS
A friend of mine got a M42 Heer ,,with" original ET decal and original liner dated 2-44
The liner was never out of the helmet.A helmet specialist confirmed that.
I have also read that it happend quite often.
What do you think about?
Thank you.

It depended on the helmet wearer as to whether the decal was removed.
Obviously many or most ignored the order.

It would be nice if you could post the factory code, shell size, and lot number information. The lot number would tell me if the helmet likely did or did not have a factory decal applied.
If it did, then the liner was likely a new depot replacement in 1944 or 1945 using new split rivets and slotted washers, period done of course, but not at a helmet factory.

The helmet is marked in front on left side EF66 an not in the back.

Contemporary photos show that this order was often ignored !!
The gates of hell were opened and we accepted the invitation to enter" 26/880 Lance Sgt, Edward Dyke. 26th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers , ( 3rd Tyneside Irish )

Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader

The order to stop applying the hoheitsabzeichen is from October 1943. It applies to the factories and it was carried out for Wehrmacht decals , SS and Polizei decal drop was later in the war.
A lotnumber cross referenced from the known lot databases can help identify if the helmet should carry a decal. As this one has a decal it is from before the order of October 1943 so logically the liner leather should carry an earlier date. If the band has a correct date it is prove that the leather alone has been switched.
