Doesn't the varnish on it look VERY close to the varnish used on his kitchen chairs?

Perhaps a home handy-man knocked this one up in order to sell yet another obscure piece of militaria? Not pointing any fingers here, just food for thought? I could imagine something like this could draw in a large sum from the right buyer..

I am quite sure that paper mache helmets were made as kinder toy's in pre war Germany.

This helmet features all the characteristics of a full-size, early "cut-out" style Luftwaffe parade dress helmet. The oversized lugs with the early "droop-tail" Luftwaffe eagle and national shield really dress this up. The chinstrap is made of black woven fabric. Here is another idea. Could it be for shaping the leather in the liner? On classic cars they steam the leather to shape it to the desired form. When steam is applied the leather becomes very soft and easy to shape. But then again, why do you need the helmet shape for that?

Thanatos theory is not unlikely to me.

I am sure I have read somewhere that high ranking retired German officers also wore a paper mache version of the real deal due to steel helms being to heavy for them to wear when on parade.From kinder to the old and frail.
I will attempt confirm this when I get home.
