Helmet with questions

Hello Sirs,
I purchased this yesterday from the daughter of the vet who brought it back. I'm told that it was obtained during the Battle of the Bulge but have no way to verify that and I bought the helmet and not the story. I am not knowledgeable in the area of German items althought I do pick up a piece here and there when I can. The price was very right so I took my chances on it. It's not in great condition but it's my first so I'm happy with it.

There appears to be some paint overspray as seen on the front of the helmet. Most of what appears to be silver paint on the front of the helmet is just sun glare but the paint spot can be clearly seen. Suggestions on how to remove this without damaging the original paint along with any other information about the helmet would be greatly appreciated.

Can someone please tell me the date of manufacture and/or approximate value? I don't plan to sell it but of course it's always nice to know the value of items.
