Really?! Thats interesting. I have been told the Englishmen were called "roundheads" back in the Medievals. I have an irish friend here, he always refeer to the english as Roundheads- very funny for me who actually have big empty round head.
So krauts are "Squareheads",
English are "Roundheads"
Anyone else with some historical facts??!
Oliver Cromwells soldiers during the English civil war were called 'round heads' because of their domed helmets.
The german helmet looked squareish because of the shape so I guess a similar name was coined?

Nice bunch of helmets there Rene my dad would refer to Germans "As square heads" all the time when I was growing up and he finally explained to me the shape of the helmet made them look square from a distance. timothy
It's not just an American slang term-have heard Australians of WW2 vintage refer to Germans that way-and yes, it's due to the shape of the helmets including the pickelhaube pointy types of WW1.
PS the head shape was accentuated by the favoured very short crewcuts of the German army compared to many other forces.
