This helmet has been in our family for years. What do you think of it? What model is it and is there a way to determine what kind of unit it comes from?

It looks likes a M40 or M35, as for tracking the unit, most likely impossible
Very nice M40 Q helmet. Nice patina with 98% decal, missing it's draw stringl. Unfortunately you won't find the unit where this helmet has served unless it is hand painted/written somewhere which yours appears not to have then it will impossible. Don't let this out of the family.

I remember as a kid the helmet was in even better condition. It got "lost" for years in the house. I re found it in the garage and I was excited it wasnt ripped off but also saw that it had rusted some and liner had gotten wet and dried.
I actually used to wear the helmet to play army with friends. Thank God it has survived.
Very nice M40 'Quist' made (size 64) Luftwaffe helmet. Great to see it
complete with the original chin strap. You are very lucky it survived !
You can find a drawstring for it on-line - they are cheap enough,
or use a thin, round, beige coloured shoe string.
I would not display a German helmet on a head form, as this may
eventually harm/stretch the liner. I use a paper towel dispenser
made of wood as a display stand, which does not
touch the liner at all.
From your entry below, it sounds like you have a potentially
wonderful collection of WWII German memorabilia, which,
as stated, would be good to keep in the family..........
Regards,
Steve.
The name in the helmet and on the liner is my great Uncle's. He was a medic in the 121st infantry regiment 8th infantry division. Could possibly figure out what unit if I could trace which forces his unit fought with but then again it could have been in a booty pile.
Other items that came home with him were a luftwaffe buckle & uniform eagle (long gone to time; maybe still in the house), binoculars, black wound badge and ribbon w/ crossed swords.
I'll help you out. Send the helmet to my house and i will keep it in a nice dry area with my other Luft helmets.
Good helmet , make sure to keep it as is.
