I think they can be salvaged, but don't let them dry out, otherwise they will just crumble. For me I would soak them in a mild solution of water and baking soda (just a small amount) and let them dry out slowly......................you have nothing to loose
I would suggest you do not let them dry out completely before introducing some form of restoration oil or other treatment. If they become totally dry, they will be like a rock and no amount of treatment will save them. They will break every time you try to bend them. You should try to replace the water in them with some kind of leather preservative.

Using clear professional cleaning agents, which is firstly clean the leather , then removing the rust and soils , which is deep in the leather. Mechanical clean and wash in neutral water, then repeat the process of tanning, to preserve the leather to being a stone, after all of this

Never use oils- it will not removed, and the leather remains black, and will be destroyed over some time. Never use alkaline- it's death for the leather
