Can anyone tell me the difference between the M40 and M43 German WW2 helmets, and are the liners interchangable?

    Hi

There is no M43..The only German helmets using that design are M35 - M40 and M42 .The markings are probably made by the soldier or they could be some kind of division identification.

That's an M42 you are showing. The flared edge you see is folded inwards with the M35/40. All German WW2 combat helmets used the M31 liner system.

The d rings on an M35 are squared, while the d rings on an m40 and an M42 are rounded. Jim G.

The M35 has a grommet vent, a separate piece added to the shell while the
m40 & m42 air vents are stamped into the shell
