M40 Heerestruppe... What to do with it?

Article about: Ken, thanks for the clarification. Identifying decals good from bad is all part of the learning curve. Don't give up. It's well worth it to learn, and we all make mistakes. Hell, I was carry

Wouldn't it like take months and months to do that? That sound almost impossible, if you look at the pitting on the helmet.

Who would do such an effort to sell it for that price (barely 80$)?

An SS-decal, yes, but a Quist decal?? Sounds a bit far-fetched. Maybe I'll try WAF one of these days..

    Cheers

I don't know the reasons for faking your lid, if it's faked at all. Herr is two examples of some fakes and one not faked. Notice on the tri color lid that the decal bubbles out, not in. The party shield and SS runes are fakes. Both helmets are mine. Also i don't know how they do it, but i doubt it takes them that long to do so.

That's what I was thinking too.. Money can't be the reason, not at all. If it were an elite helmet I'd be far more skeptic about it.

On your helmets it looks almost like they filled the pitting where the decals had to be placed, simply to avoid that pitting.

I put it on WAF to see what the big guns have to say about it..

    Cheers

Actually a guy I know dug it up, but fact is that it is a ground dug relic. Only the liner was taken out, or what was left of it.

Unless someone burried it on the exact same spot where it was found (somewhere in the vicinity of Dunkirk), there's no way that it's a fake helmet. I got it quite cheap as well, too bad the liner is missing. He didn't even care about the decal or the type, just knew that it was an army helmet.
A fake of that quality would blow my socks off really!

    Cheers
Believe me you haven't seen the best fakes yet... , I'd suggest you get some more opinions from helmet collectors who specialise in decals.

It's on WAF.. Wonder what they will say about it. I know there's a lot of good fake stuff around, but fakers almost always tend to copy the big $ helmets, I'd be surprised if it were a fake. Really. It would scare me. It's that good, hope it's not a fake though.

Note that the rust on the decal is more severe where the pitting began to strike. The decal has began to rust in these exact spots, and has turned brown/red (rust). I don't know how the pitting develops itself but it has something to do with oxygen. In that case it's possible that the decal survives in some spots and gets pushed back along with the corrossion. Of course that is a matter of time.

I'll see what the experts on WAF say about it.

Here is another ground dug lid in my possession. Does not look like your decal.

I saw it on the WAF , the decal picture is a lot bigger there and I'm sure of my case. Don't look for a motive as to why it would / could be a fake. It's not always about the money , some people just like to create things for their own pleasure. Some are good at it.
It's all about the design flaws in your decal , take a good look at the one in Ken's book (especially the six claws area) and compare them to yours and the fake I posted).

I'll refrein from commenting on the WAF till other guys spoke their mind.

Ken your willing to accept accolades from the forum members here but as soon as Frank suggests its a fake suddenly this forum is useless for opinions and you feel the need to jump to WAF? As a moderator of part of this helmet section I find your strange set of dual purpose motives very self serving. BTW I'd easily consider Frank as one of the "big guns". I'd heed his advice. A WAF membership does not make one a big gun.

As well, I'm afraid to say your decal is a fake Ken. The claws confirm it. The right middle claw on a BF decal is squiggly, yours is not, and the "big foot" of the BF on yours is easily recognizable as one of the many Q fake decals. Why would someone fake it? Why not and because they can are two good simple reasons.
