Default M40 helmet by Po Valley

    Hi to all,
on a farm, in the area where I live, near the Po river, where in the spring of 1945 German troops camped during the dramatic retreat, pursued by Allied troops and by constant air raid, amid the wreckage and old tools agricultural, I found this German M40 helmets stayed there for 70 years!
I had to commit myself to try and save it with a little restoration.
The M40 has been cleaned of rust, greasy but the hardest part was saving the leather of liner, which disintegrated in touch; I had to fix it with a transparent resin; below you can see the result.
I know that it's in modest conditions, I was sorry that it was lost..... considering that it is definitely an original piece.
    I hope it is interesting.

    greetings
    Roberto

Nice job but clear resin? That's a new one on me, the leather didn't look to bad.

    Hi Glenn,
in fact, the appearance of the leather was not bad, but as soon as you touched it broke, especially on one half of liner that was especially ruined.
I used a transparent paint based on silicone resins.

Hi Roberto, I think with a helmet like this, the important part is that you know the history of it. To find it still in the area and probably untouched for 70+ years is amazing. You have done a great job preserving it, and it will now be able to tell a story for years to come, unlike most helmets that have just become artefacts on shelves! Leon.

    Well done!!
I presume it was in a house or out building for that level of preservation?
And clear silicone resin is a new one for me.
Maybe a flattening base would help next time?

    Hi Denmark,
yes, it was in a garage outside.
Good your advice for future restoration!

    Thanks, Friends
I'am glad that this helmet was to your liking, than I want to show another curiosity: in an other rural house, time ago, I noticed a strange tool they used to clean drains.
I looked better and I realized that it is a FJ M38 which had welded a iron handle!!..........a true sorrow for my heart, this is it:
