There is no rust under the paint... It's just pitting..
Tough to say on limited pics. Not much collector value in it even if it was all genuine. I'd pass on it myself.

Hi , when I blow up the pictures the paint looks to be standard factory grey on an no decal M40 to me. The "lines/light scratches" that I can see appear to be from over zealous cleaning of this relic to me. Leon.

Probably wartime paint IMO. It has suffered from poor storage though.
