M40 quist helmet with red marking on front

Just pick this up for under $300 usd and was wondering what the red paint on front might be, looks period done and paint looks like a field apply fieldgreu,also chin strap is dated 1942

Kind of hard to see with the photos. Nice that they are outdoors but can't get a close up view to see the paint.

The paint might be old but I seriously doubt it is wartime. The 1960's were almost 60 years ago, so could easily have been a kid playing with the helmet.
