The link to the Hicks site in Wehrmacht39's post (post #5) has invaluable information about these helmets and good pictures of what is believed to be one of the few known real Sauerland helmets. Close comparison of the decal in that link to the decal on this helmet does reveal some subtle, but distinct, graphic and color differences, so, in my humble opinion, the jury is out. Jim G.

Well the original poster has never posted anything beyond the one post here despite being asked for better pictures , these are heavily faked helmets and personally have not seen a single one I'd trust. Buyer beware.

Here's one with a fake decal I studied recently.

I have been reading the coments and ops regarding the M42. Until my mate showed me the helmet, I had never seen or heard of "sauerland". I have looked at web sites and read "expert opinions". From what the owner tells me, this M42 was knocking around years before the "fakes" started to appear. I have studied the decal and magnified the image, super-imposed the image with what is supposed to be "an original". if this one is fake, then the "original" is fake also. This, of course is only my opinion. The helmet is in auction on the 2nd April, whatever it fetches is imaterial to me, the research was interesting and enjoyable.

Hi, Ive just come back from viewing at Plympton Auctions and have had this helmet in my hands and given it a very good look over. I can say it looks to be 100 % genuine. Good honest wear to the shell and liner, the drawstring is missing as is also the chin strap. The decal looks good and again the wear is consistant. There is also faintly visible on the outside of the shell what appears to be evidence of camo paint...there certainly appears to be different shades which look like they were deliberately applied. Ill be watching this one with interest.

It was my first time visiting this particular auction house and i was very impressed with the quality and amount of lots..they are planning on holding a specialist militaria auction every 6 months.

Well all of a sudden, one of the rarest of helmets out there seem to be popping up everywhere and at prices that most can afford, i think i'd be quite happy to listen to Franks opinion on these and forget about all the hype surrounding them
