    I wonder how many modern german familys have kept their fathers german helmets and pass them onto other generations.im sure there are many thousands of them/has any of the guys heard of any examples?

    I guess that in 1945 many (grand) fathers were persuaded to hand over their helmets to some very impatient chaps in khaki or olive green!

    Not many German servicemen arrived back home with their kit.

    I seen a documentary made in the 70s interviewing a ww2 german officer in his home in germany and behind him beside some books was his m35.this is the type of one i mean that escaped being captured or hiden ect ect.when sep dietriech of the ss died DECADES AFTER THE WAR ENDED HIS COFFIN WAS CARRIED WITH A M35 ON TOP OF IT.

    Hi LV, I know that you are refering to Major Remer from "GD" in the "WORLD AT WAR".

    The helmet used on Sepp Dietrich's coffin was a Heer not SS.

    Very very few former soldiers got to keep a helmet.

    If you look at photographs of surrendered or captured German troops in 1945, the steel helmet is rarely seen.

    They are all wearing soft caps of one sort or another.

    So, to answer the question - I suspect very few.

    Yes ade i knew it wasnt ss .i think the helmet had the eagle but no swastika on it?
