Hi Mike, it is a name label. I have a couple on items in my collection.

These screen printed white cotton labels could be privatly purchased from military tailors or soldiers canteens for the men to mark their uniforms and equipment. These were popular pre war and early war with all branches of the services, RAD, etc. The name in this case is "Karl I Schmidt". But I cannot make out the unit marking. I can read "1/28 fea *scho*".

    Cheers, Ade.

    It's Fliegerersatzabteilung 23 Oschatz

The name is not Karl I. Schmidt, but Karl Schmidt I (1), several Schmidts in this unit at the time.

Thanks for that The British Army had the same system of giving a number to men with the same surname. This happened a lot in some of the Welsh Regiments. I did not realise the German Army did the same thing.

    Cheers, Ade.

    Mr. Panelvan,

Are you using a wax in your helmets?

Hi Mike, never be tempted to put anything on your helmets as you will devalue them by doing so.

    Cheers, Ade.
