Being a total newbie, this "German" shaped helmet appears to be an M40. The air vent is pressed and the helmet edges are rolled over. It has 2 extra rivets. Five rivets in total and the three rivets where a German helmet would have them are fitted with washers. (to cover the larger hole). The paint is a dark green, with what appears to be a lighter green underneath. There are no decals or markings that I can see. It is certainly not a light weight helmet. The lining has 10 lobes and is made of a very pale coloured leather. Is the helmet re-furbished or fake ?

    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks.

Thanks for the replies, but now that raises another question.
If it is West German, could the shell actually be an M40 or possibly made
from the same dies?. The reason I ask is because of the 3 large rivet holes
which have been covered by washers.
My original thought was a Spanish modelo, but they apparently have 7 rivets
and a straight edge, not rolled over or flared.
But if it is a West German border control force helmet, I am still happy.
    Thanks and Cheers,
    Journeyman.

From the location of the rivits I think it is a Spanish made helmet.

I appreciate all the replies. Thank you.
After searching various leads mentioned above, I think it may be a Finish M-55 .
Apparently the shell was made in Germany and is identical to an M-40 .
I doubt very much if it is one of the war time models that were sent to Finland.
He is an article I found. Also noted is the 10 lobe liner like the one I have.

It may have been made in Germany, but it didn't get those extra holes there...highly unlikely. Liner is definitely not WW2 German.

Also, check inside the helmet (usually on the left side) for maker's mark and size (for example ET64) and check the rear of the helmet, also on the inside, for a production/batch number (3-4 digits).

    Hi,
Nice helmet for what it is, but as said not wartime issue M40, i have noticed the airvent ( Doenut )
is larger that the M40 german helm, this is a good way of telling post war helmets.
