Is there any reason one would paint a heer decal on a helmet during wartime? Do I assume this bit of helmet art is certainly postwar? Just curious.

Wartime touched up decals are pretty common. If this one is or isn't I couldn't tell you, best wait for others.

Is the shell black?
wartime german touched up decals are usely hard to tell and well done on m35 m40 and m42 .
but GI touched up decals are usely cruded.

Looks like black reissue or maybe postwar paint
I'm thinkin' about it. I thought it was unusual....which I like.
I have no idea when this was done, but I must say the paint appears to have been applied some time ago and it is done quite nicely IMO.
Maker and lotnr can perhaps tell us if the helmet should have a decal originally yes or no. Probably post war added though.
What's the liner like ?
Hi,not one for me,i cannot see any sign of the original decal under the "touch up" which is pretty poor if period(unless of course it is cheap enough).Do you have any pictures of the liner and lot number, that may improve things a little. Leon.
If it was a touch up you would think it would follow the original pretty closely, I reckon post war GI addition personally. Maybe he was a bit jealous of his buddies' decalled souvenirs
