Rescued helmet from the dump

Article about: Can you take a photo when you are holding the strap between you fingers? Just so we can see how it looks like?

Default Rescued helmet from the dump

I found this at the dump.
    Maybe an Austrian M16?
Has a metal band inside, with some tiny pieces of old leather around a few edges.
Two straps are made from canvas, and attached with rivets.
Has an inscription that says "P 5 8 2" on the inside center.
Has an inscription on the inside near one of the straps that maybe says OAS 66... or maybe CAS?
Also has a very faint penciled, cursive name written on the inside on the back, but it's hard to make out. Starts with a K. Like Kalin something?

Can anyone help me identify it?

Worthwhile rescue from the dump, or not?

    Thanks!

Worth rescuing? ...... as we Aussies would say, "bloody oath!"

Its a M18 also and I love the canvas strap - may even be period?

    Great score

Anyone know what the inscriptions mean? I thought the M18 had one rivet and one hole on the side, whereas this one has two rivets and one hole? What should I do with it? Are there collectors that would be interested in something like this, and if so, how would I find them?

Correct classification is Austrian m.17 in all original configuration. I'd gladly take it off your hand.

Indeed an Austrian. High chinstrap rivets on the skirt are the big external feature. The canvas strap is Austrian WW1 issue too btw Dan

    What a great save!!
    Classic Austrian M17.
The things people throw away still amazes me.
