Default Single Decal Luftschutz - Horned Shell

I have had this one forever. It is only a Luftschutz helmet, and is missing the liner and chinstrap, but it is one of the rarer shell styles, a horned M34 with 4 rivets. The shell has no maker or size stamps, but is very small, probably a size 60 or 62. Hope you like it. Happy New Year to all, Jim G.

Why would a lightweight helmet have the lugs designed for a frontal plate on it??? ....... seems weird to me.

Hi Dan, Vent lugs were utilized on virtually all German stahlhelm styles until 1934. Only a limited number of brow plates were produced, only in 1916, and were recalled shortly thereafter. M18's had lugs, even though there was no intention to use browplates with them. Commercially produced helmets manufactured after WWI, including M18, droop bill, Himmler, RZM, and some Edelstahl styles, also utilized the so called Frankenstein lugs, even though stirnpanzers were never intended to be used with them. In fact, on at least one interwar commercially produced M18 type shell the lugs were actually much thinner than those on WWI combat shells and would not have accommodated a brow plate. Also, on many, if not most, of the commercially produced helmets there are no washers on the interior of the lugs, which probably would make the lugs too weak to bear the weight of a brow plate. This is a rare style shell, but certainly correct. Cheers, Jim G.
