No manufacture stamps on the chinstrap, or crown stamps on the shell either. I haven' t dismantled the liner, but there is evidence via the retaining rivets that the helmet has been apart at least once before.

Is the color in the photos true to life? And is the inside dome painted the same color as well. Have you looked at the split pins? Have they been tampered with?
From these photos, I would go with the standard answer of post war repaint with fake decals scraped off.
Edit: Your second post comfirmed my question on the split pins (I took too long to type LoL)
As they HAVE been tampered with, I stick with my observation above. Post war job.

Since I haven't checked out the markings on the liner band, I was wondering if it was a war time made, foreign reissue of some sort? The riveted chin strap sans markings leads me in that direction. Wonder if it is reissued, or just an original shell that has been messed with during its post-war existence.

A post war repaint for me too. The colour of the paint is not correct and the surface on which it is painted over appears to have started to deteriorate at some stage.

Components sans the chin strap appear to be original but only in hand can you be 100% sure if the liner band is real. That said from the photos it is a nice tight fit and there is nothing we can see to point to it being fake. But as you noted, the split pins are bent thus it has most likely been removed to paint the shell.

Thanks all. Yes, the chinstrap is blatantly obvious as a recent addition. It required riveting for attachment which makes one wonder if this helmet was reissued during it's post-war lifetime.
The paint is not 100% correct for wartime Feldblau, and it is obvious that some pitting and other damage lies UNDERNEATH the present coat, at least on the outside surface. I know these later EF M42s are generally pretty rough in appearance in general, and the forming marks in the steel are evident on this one as well. Even so, I don't think that the slight pitting and surface scratches visible under the paint would be present on an original.
I don't know what is going on with the paint choice and the erroneous stab at the remnants of an SS single decal. Obviously the individual attempting to fake an original helmet didn't bother to do one lick of research. I got this for only $150. understanding that I was picking up an original M42 shell NOT in original condition, and a possible wartime liner.

BTW,
The liner rivets don't show signs of having been mangled if they WERE removed at one time, and all have their associated washers. I suppose it is possible that it has not been tampered with. However there is some mismatched weathering to the paint on one of them, and they aren't real tight like other originals I have in my collection. Then again, I'm no expert on these.

All has been said , post war painted/used helmet with original liner but post war strap.
