The heads of the split pins (rivets) were often different shades from the helmet color. They typically were ordered in from another factory with the heads pre-painted for assembly, which is why you would see that. So, it's not necessarily a red flag unless you see other signs of tampering with them.

Well, that ended that line of enquiry! ....... maybe they will surface with another collector? ( probably with a nice story attached ) and we will do the dance once more.
