I really like that Steve, you have matched it pretty much spot on to one of my final sketches actually. I like the way you have canted the envelope too and pushed it over the edges of the oak leaves.

I'm getting some stripper today to begin, I should have the thing finished by the weekend. We could begin as early as next week I should point out too, that the reason we can get started so soon is that Todd (helmetone) has shown a great amount of trust and sent the helmet to me with no form of payment from my end yet. We are working out a trade but he suggested sending it in the meantime to save time Cheers Todd.
The only thing I might have changed is the bottom left corner of
the envelope being tucked in behind the wreath. In this way it
looks like the envelope is coming through the wreath - the
way the tank does on a Panzerkampfabzeichen. It's your
design idea, if you choose to go this route.........
    Regards,

    Steve.

I like the effect it has, makes it 3d almost. I think I will incorporate that feature for sure. I have some sketches of different eagles holding the envelope too, like the ROAG bird holds the lightning bolts, we shall see. It has made me appreciate how very nicely the real awards were designed, a lot of thought went into each one to animate the meaning of the particular award. I might make the '1000' 'mit brillianten'

This could be the way to go. Instead of the eagle holding a swas,
the envelope and 'WRF' lettering can be reversed - though the
first one has a better balance and looks more like
    a 'real' award.........

I think I preferred the other version Steve, I like the idea of it having a swas to keep it looking more like a real award as you said The GAB style oak leaves look good, I've used my MS badge for the basis of my sketches. I'll scan them at work tomorrow.

Update; the lid is stripped, and repainted. I'm pretty happy with it, not a bad looking M40. Tomorrow I will paint the badge

I found a swastika under the paint on the front of the lid, Todd and I think probably this was a biker lid in it's time. This thing has had, and will continue to have, a very interesting existence
