I agree with Luis. Anyway $50 is about what I would pay for a bare shell. I base this on the fact that I'd want to keep total cost below $150, and good repro liners are not cheap. But liners, split pins, authentic paint colors etc. are available so you could make a nice though not original helmet.
I restored a Finnish-sourced M40/55 to Wermacht/Heer color and markings and gave it to the small local military museum. They were glad to get it because they'd been displaying a Spanish Modelo-Z as an example of the German WWII helmet.
I made it clear that the thing was post-war and though German-made came from Finland. But it is a pretty accurate representation of what an early-war M40 looks like, and I enjoyed working on it.
