It's Finnish alright, but produced by Hungary rather than Germany.

How come it doesn't have the thing on the outside back rim?

The Model 35 Hungarian Combat Helmet had a metal loop and single rivet, the model 35 Finnish-Hungarian had double rivets on each side. That's the easiest way to tell the difference.

Hello!..Submitted, warbuff, photo - M40 made in Germany, with the Finnish remake. Hungarian export version of the 35M is quite different(+holes clasps placed in different ways).

Hi yes it is a German ww2 made M40 shell but used by the Finnish Army , the extra holes have been drilled to fit the Finnish post war liner into the shell

Should I put a post war german liner in the shell or a ww2 orig. liner?

It depends on what you want the helmet to be ,You sometimes see the Finnish post war liners on Ebay for sell or you can add a wartime liner to make it back into a German helmet but the problem is the extra holes that have been drilled ,good luck with which ever way you go

The shell in question is not German from what I can tell, but Hungarian produced, and only based on the German design. Finland did use German made shells, but I'm not sure if this is one. Look at the interior skirt for signs of German Manufacture marks. If the shell is German made it will have a lot number, and a Maker/size marking on the skirt.
