    Hello, welcome!
I dont know much about this but what i do know is that other members may be able to help if you post up all the markings / writing that is inscribed on the sword. At the moment im not even sure if this is military related at all.

    Regards,

    Hi, Matt !

It is a German hunting dagger. Slightly shorter than a sword.

There were - and probably still are - many hunting clubs in Germany where land and game
were maintained by 'Jagermeisters' - Master Hunters - who lead hunting parties.
( Chuck Yeager of WWII fame became one while stationed in Germany after the war. )

It is not military per se, but I think the price is much too high. I may be wrong,
but it is really a specialists item - someone who exclusively collects daggers
and swords will know better. Most German hunting daggers I have seen
'in person' have been post war examples.

Over-pricing happens lot at these places because sometimes, pickers or dealers
simply don't know what they have. It seems like they choose an amount that
'sounds right' without knowing the item's true value !
Just because it looks old, doesn't mean that it is. They may have paid
too much themselves and have had to recoup........

They should also have provided a maker's mark. This will show a name or logo
that may be tied in to a particular era. It may be from the late 19th or early
20th century, or the late 40's - or even the 1950's, which is where I tend
to think it was made........but I am only guessing.

With access to the internet such as it is today, there is no excuse for anything
to be incorrectly labeled or priced.

not to knock this at all, because I havent seen this particular hunting dagger....but I have seen period hunting daggers from different sites from 600-1000 USD. I would have to agree with wakwolf that it sounds slightly high. But if you are a hunting dagger collector, then it might be worth it to you. I know if i was going to spend 1200 it would be military related, but thats just me. Its cool, but I think you would really need to be INTO the whole hunting and forestry part of german history to go for this
