Sword 102 (166) This sword is a Model M1889 Prussian Infantry Officers sword by Alexander Coppel Solingen, ALCOSO, ACS. The trade mark comprises a scrip "ALCOSO" surmounting a set of scales and the initials "ACS" surmounting the name "Solingen". The fixed guard has three vertical guard bars covering the knuckles. The cartouche is in the form of an elaborate Imperial Eagle surmounted by the Imerial Prussian Crown. This is a very high quality presentation sword with several additional features only found on weapons of this quality.

    a. Hilt. Cast in gilded brass, the hilt comprises six parts,
    (1) Circular tang nut in the form of the Prussian Imperial Crown.
    (2) Pommel cap which is very ornate and features oak leaves and accorns signifying streangth.
    (3) Knuckle bow and cross guard. This item includes the cartouche in the form of an elaborate Imperial Prussian Eagle.
    (4) Furrule.
    (5) Finger support. This is usually an optional item so may/may not be present. In this case not present.
    (6) Grip assembly. This includes the wooden former, cover and wire wrap. In this case shagreen with a brass wire wrap and grip insignia again in the format of an Imperial Prussian Eagle.
    b. Obverse Langet. None.
    c. Reverse langet. None.
    d. Pommel. Nut and cap assemble as described above.
    e. Blade. Heavily nickel plated with double full size fullers. The blade is beautifully etched on both sides as well as the spine. The etching is highlighted in gold on blued pannels and bears the title of "Ostafrika 13. Inf. - Reg. 9. Potsdam" on the obverse side. The remainder of the etching is of a mounted officer, a horse's head and foliage etc. The reverse side of the blade includes stands of arms and what appears to be quite a long dedication/inscription within a portioned scroll.
    f. Scabbard. Standard black steel scabbard with a single ring suspension fitting and loop to the reverse side of the scabbard.
    g. Rarety. Rare.

"Ostafrika 13. Inf. - Reg. 9. Potsdam" refers to the 13th Company of Infantry Regiment 9 whose home station was in Potsdam. The 13th Company of this regiment was based in the city of Kondoa - Irangi in German East Africa which is now in modern Tanzania. The sword was probably purchased for, and presented to a company officer of the 13th Company possibly on promotion, retirement or posting etc??
