If 'likes' are given for the right reasons and on merit, not à la Teutonicknights then there is no harm but if a member requests not to receive them he should put a line in his signature to that effect and other members should respect it.
There are many posts here that deserve some appreciation that don't get it yet there are also some daft and pointless posts that get loads of 'likes'.

If it makes me laugh or smile, I "like" it. I like what I like and you can feel free to do the same. Are there rules for liking something? Fake melons get a smile....see.....it doesn't have to be authentic to get a "like". LOL

It's a useful tool and is appreciated by a great many members. So long as it isn't abused, it is harmless.
On the subject of abuse, I did find it impossible not to 'like' BenVK's posts, purely from the angle of providing him with more notifications that he thinks are PMs.
From a perspective of avoiding the notifications you find annoying Ben, I think is is highly amusing that everyone saw it as an opportunity for a bit of fun, me included
