Default How to verify authenticity of SS-Ehrenring

Found in the effects of my mother in law. Her stepfather Brigadier General Halley Maddox , the G3 on George Patton's staff , gave it to her sometime between 1948-1950. I don't think they were making fakes then. Is there someone who can examine this and certify it's authenticity ?

It stands a good chance, from what I can see of the photographs, but can we get macro closeups of all 4 sides of the ring and the inscriptions inside too-and not on the bright red background? It has a couple of odd bits on it that make me think abit uneasy on it, so any better clearer photos would be of much help. A pain in the neck to ask, I know, but with the value of these rings, authenticating one is no longer a simple matter.
The date of June 21,1944 marks it as a Summer Solstice ring.

Welcome to the forum. I would cautiously say it stands a chance Brian.
Cautious because as mentioned above, authenticating them requires a specialist knowledge.
The person who would be worth contacting is Don Boyle. He is widely regarded as the authority on these rings and whose seal of approval carries more weight than any other. Avoid someone with the name Gottleib.

Don Boyle is definitely the name here (and as Adrian points out... best to keep it to Don Boyle only).

I am no where near qualified to make a call on these and I won't. But if this one is good, it's a mighty nice example you have there.

How would I go about contacting Don Boyle? Is he a Historian or museum curator? I live in Central California. ( if it's not something you want to put out on the open forum you can PM me)

I am no expert, but this one has details that I like to see.
Here is Don Boyle's contact info.

Hello Brian, Thanks for getting the better photos. Cautious, absolutely, but I have to say that I do like what I am seeing. The construction looks to be correct and the engraving also. I've owned several of these rings over the years and have seen and handled who knows how many more and the vast majority-and I'm talking about 99% vast, are usually fakes. Some well made-some not so much. This ring that you have here, if it Is a fake-and I'm not saying that it is, is a frighteningly Good one. The Honor Rings have gotten to the point where a person almost has to have an unbroken provenance with proofs all the way back to day one. I normally would have suggested looking into the recipient's name, but I suspect that if someone has gone to the lengths this one took to make, it would be hardly difficult to add on a genuine recipients name as well. I'm not familiar with the name "Appel", but I suspect that it would be found on the list of known receivers.
The bottom line here, I guess, is that I, personally, am thinking that it Is genuine. But, having said that, I, absolutely, suggest that you do get into contact with Don Boyle. Send it by Registered Overnight Insured mail to him and do whatever it takes. He actually Did write the book on the Honor Rings and if he would write you a certificate for you, then it's a done deal. The condition this ring is in is almost mint and if the name proves to be some one of note-and it's quite possible that this could be-then you have a Very valuable item. Easily in excess of $10,000. Possibly considerably more on a good day and depending on what the research would turn up.
Good luck and we'll all be hoping the best! It's always a good day when a previously unknown Honor Ring turns up out of the woodwork. Only something like 3,600 are known today out of all the many thousands that were made. Sorry I can't offer a definite "Yes or No" here, but such a thing is nearly impossible to do online without holding it in your hand and examining under magnification, etc. and no "expert' of any credibility would say that they could do so. And, yes-I would suggest avoiding the one that everyone has mentioned to avoid! I think you just might have a good one,Brian. Again, Good luck and let us know how it goes with Don Boyle!
