    Tovarisch Boyesh;

    I know that these are not Litzen, but I didn't know what else to call them, except perhaps collar tabs, but they clearly do not serve the same function as collar tabs originally did.

    I have only noticed these on dress, and parade uniforms, so can anyone tell me...

    A: What are they called in the Red Army?

    B: What do they signify?

    C: What is their purpose?

    Richie;

    I forwarded the word you provided to a friend who is a native speaker. He says the word you provided is for buttonholes.

    He doesn't know what the word for those tabs is though.

    Not sure what to do now?

    Richie was correct. We call them Pilitsi. But our spelling could be suspect.

    I am certain it is the correct word, and spelling of it. Петлицы, when run through PROMPT or other translation software comes out as BUTTONHOLES.

    I'll gather some info for you at some point - perhaps even this evening - for referencing rank groups and branch of service that these designate...

    So, if I am reading this correctly, these were just another means of designating (generally) rank, and branch, and were just for looks, not so much for any specific purpose, beyond the aforementioned.

    Thanks all!
