Hello, I'm looking into putting together some Bolshevik Russian civil war impressions, one of these shall be an armoured train commander. Now i need to know
1 - what sleeve insignia was used in 1919 and 1922
2 - a commander of an armoured train would be what rank?

I recall a photo in the Russian civil war 1 - the red army by osprey - unfortunately i can't find the book but it is this particular photo of an armoured train commander i i want to use to base my uniform on. This photo appears to not have been published on the internet anywhere. It's a man sat down, with a moustache and wearing a Caucasian shashka, fur hat. his 1918 commanders breast badge is an artillery badge - i just can't remember his sleeve insignia and rank! any help would be greatly appreciated!

There was no ranks yet. The period you are talking about was transactional the Red Guard was being converter into RKKA. By the order of 23 of February of 1921. Bolsheviks were getting rid of socialists, anarchists etc. The only recognised rank was a commander of RKKA with a commander bagde.

sorry, i use the term "rank" very loosely...i was thinking in terms of company commander, platoon commander etc so when thinking about the 1918 commanders sleeve patch, what would an armoured train commander have, squares? diamonds? being in command of a train would he be the equivalent of a brigade commander etc? i found the picture i mentioned, he wears a red cloth star with the imperial armoured train badge on his left sleeve.

Those were in use only since 1924. Train commander woudn't have any special atributes on the uniform. They hardly had any regimented uniform that time.

Sorry I keep posting the links in Russian. 'cos I'm sure you have googled it in English

Here are couple of photos to make this clear.

1st one : commander of armoured train 'lieutenant Shnmidt' A. E. Zaycev 1919
    2nd: 1921 , 12th regiment of RKKA

photos belong to a colleague known as 'luber'

That breast star badge, with the hammer and plug, was only thing to show difference between a commander and the rest.

Don't worry. Here is him as well a little bit late, with the sleeve squares . It's the end of 1921 the things are getting better. Commander of company. Sorry for not making things clear earlier. I got confused with the enamel squares and triangles.
