Hi Milo, the "Pogoni" or shoulder boards are "slip on" in style and simply button in place.

As in all armies, the wearing of full beards was frowned upon: it would interfere with the tight fitting of the respirator (gas mask). Moustashes were fashionable at times. Hair was worn short for hygene reasons to keep head lice at bay.

    Cheers, Ade.
Oh, really? That's a huge relief.
I was worried they had to be stitched
or sewed on, which would seem
    inconvient because I don't think
Soviet infantry in the field got to
    change their uniforms all that
    frequently which would have made
it difficult to change the Pogoni if
    they were promoted.

Thank you. Somebody said the same
thing on another forum, though I've
actually never seen a Soviet soldier
wearing a gas mask during WWII aside from the satchels they wore over their shoulder. Shaving is no big deal, though. I just thought a little stubble might add a darker, grungier, more veteran look.
