Research is a bitch sometimes. Very time consuming and tedious work. But when you get it!! The reward is awesome

The hard work is very gratifying !

I wanted to update this thread with a photo that I found while going through some archives today at the museum..

Clearly a case of "Never say Never" with a particular item.. In this case the Headquarters ETO patch being worn as the combat patch on the right sleeve..

This photo was taken in November 1955 at Fort Bliss, Texas

You will notice that the Sergeant in the background has the same insignia as what is on MAPs coat..

Not sure what insignia was on his left sleeve but since this was taken at Fort Bliss, I am inclined to believe that the insignia would have been the same as the Specialist being awarded the trophy which is the Fourth Army Patch.... But it is unknown and my guess is pure speculation..

Thanks Smitty for digging this up.

Question. Would this not make sense if it was 1955? I would assume that the Sgt in the background was once in the ETO Headquarters unit but when assigned to his new unit (4th Army?) he moved it to the right shoulder? Is that not the correct order or am I missing something?

    Map,

You are absolutely correct. The NCO was most likely assigned to HQ ETO and upon returning to the states that patch became his "former wartime service insignia" which by regulations is worn on the right shoulder. The patch came out in March 1945, so there was a period of about 2 months that people assigned to HQ ETO could have been eligible to wear the insignia as a "combat patch"..

I have seen stranger combinations on uniforms...

Thanks Smitty...still leaves the question open on my jacket LoL!!!! Why right shoulder when it should have been on the left..........

Don't know if you saw the post over at USMF that Phil was kind enough to start.

Who wore this patch? ETO Headquarters - ARMY AND USAAF - U.S. Militaria Forum

btw.....took another photo of the jacket....gives it the credit it deserves

Yeah on that post over there, I think member QED4 makes a point in post #16 with the dates of the ETO headquarters and also the date the 8th AF was deactivated..
Great B-14 Michael. I still love the 8th AF and Gunner patches and its a Tech Sgt to boot. That is what my Uncle was and so was my buddy Phil who was with him.. Just the ETO does add the questions to it. Possibly what Baron had mentioned is its history.

It's a head scratcher for sure, but my gut tells me that this is not a put together jacket. I honestly think it is one of those "Don't tell me they wouldn't wear it" types. But as an amateur with US uniforms, I could be wrong and it is put together.

I think Baron is probably the closest to being correct, that the Sgt threw on the ETO patch before going home (I don't think he meant that the bullion was added to go home).

Thanks for all your help on this one. As soon as I saw it I knew I had to send you the photos.

I love the studio photo of this jacket on the black background.

I agree with your assessment of Baron's statement. I think this 8th AF vet could of added this on his way home. Like I had said, its a nice 8th AF B-14 flight jacket . I think the Gunner and the 8th AF patches are original to this. Add to that the engineer rating(takes Time and Training)I just have my doubts about the ETO. I don't think he would of been allowed to wear that set up at the ETO headquarters . He is only an E-7. He is a senior NCO but there are still more above him and usually there are a lot of heavies at the HQ level. Ones that would be sticklers to uniform reg's.

Correct. To add I doubt the ETO was added by anyone other than the vet (or maybe a son playing Army). It does not enhance the value of the tunic (and if proven fake it decreases value) so why add it. The money shot on this tunic are the fact that it is a B-14 and the bullion insignia.
