Can anyone identify this patch?
I bought it cheap and have no idea what it is.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi,
Not really my field; but it apears to be a right-sleeve badge for a US Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class.
not sure what the star is- speciality.... think it is gunnery.
Jim.
ok thanks!
I appreciate it!
Do you know why it would be made out of that material? Is it old maybe? I have other Navy patches and they don't look like this. why the weird cloth???
Thanks!

Almost sure it isn't US, eagle is all wrong. Looks European. Wait for some more opinions. The closer I look the more sure I am it's not US. Still an interesting patch. John
Could you describe the cloth, please, in what way is it wierd?
In the meantime, have a look at this old thread:
1886 Navy Rates - U.S. Militaria Forum
It's a good forum, they've helped me in the past.
Looks ok as a US eagle to me.... all the right elements, but not exactly the best example (I hear you john, no bets!).
Alot of theatre-made army patches ain't that close to the design.
Was worried by the eagle being right facing- but found a few on the web.
What I couldn't find was any on a red backing (all were white or blue), or one with a star, so i'm stumped, sorry.
perhaps mechant navy, somebody else's Navy that was setup or sponsored by the US,....?
Jim.
Jim, I looked at the other site (nice job locating it) and I didn't see anything that would make me think it is US. As far as I know US Naval Ranks are on either a navy blue, black or white background, also the use of gold colored thread seems wrong for the US enlisted ranks. The quality of the embroidery doesn't seem up to snuff. The final problem I would have with it is the gold border around it. Believe me I'm not an expert on naval rank insignia (sometimes a little knowledge is dangerous) but just by the look of it I still think the origins of this patch might be found in Europe. I could be proven wrong and would like to find out where its from. I'm not trying to be a smart ass so please don't take it that way. Hope we can find it. Be safe, John
Definitly NOT US Military. A civilian made patch for a blazer sport coat or some civilian garb.
Steve
