    Hi guys!

On my drive from Pennsylvania and Utah, I must have stopped at every antique mall I saw. I picked up this uniform in Des Moines, Iowa.

It is a jumper and pair of pants, both named to an 'R. O. Hawk'. He was an Aviation Machinist's Mate, first Class. On the right sleeve, there is an air gunner's badge. What was his job, exactly? How could he be both a machinist and an air gunner?

    Thanks,
    Mo

    Hi Mo !

I have a pic in a book of a USN Aviation Machinist Mate, Second Class with
this Airgunner mark. These guys manned the rear guns on the Grumman
TBF Avenger. The Airgunner distinguishing mark was authorised from
    February 1943 to July 1946.

Missing from the above jumper are ribbon bar(s) and metal 'Combat
    Aircrew' wings above.

Somewhere I have a pic of a Chief Aviation Machinist Mate,
who is also a Naval Enlisted Pilot (NAP).........
    Regards,

    Steve.

Wow! That's amazing, thanks for the info!

Could it have been possible for him to have been on a PBY?

Yes, he could have been a gunner on a PBY. The Aviation Machinists Mate is his rating, the Air Gunner is a specialty qualification.
