Hi again! What do you think of this item which I recently purchased? It's a 79th Infantry Division Ike jacket and cap. I'll be honest, I bought it on eBay and due to my mistake, I think it is post war occupation. I missed the date on the picture of the QM tag. I bought it more or less for the Ike jacket and particularly the SSI patch. Is this a post war occupation and does the cap match?

It also includes dog tags, postcard picture book of France, notebook with training notes and a picture. I thought these additional items are pretty cool as well.

I'm sorry for all the questions recently but I'm an incredible newbie and am trying to learn as much as I can beforehand. At least I'm starting with the less expensive items and not purchasing anything Third Reich on ebay. JK...I would never do that! But I find it harder to find (reputable) dealers online for US as opposed to TR memorabilia.

The tan overseas cap is for summer wear and should not be worn with this
jacket, IMO. There are plenty of OD wool types around, or find an
    Enlisted visor cap to match.

What I've read on-line: The 79th Division was inactivated 10 December
1945, returned to the States 20 December 1945, and then reactivated
as an 'Organized Reserve Division' 29 November 1946.

That is a great ID'ed photo.........
    Regards,

    Steve.

Thanks for your input Steve! I do like the Ike but I thought the picture was neat along with the dog tags and notebook. I'll post better pictures when I receive it.

I was curious about the cap. It appeared to be a summer cap but would it be correct to that division?

I read similar information about the division except the reactivation. I read they were post-war occupation as well. Any idea if this jacket would be post-war occupation December 1945 or Reserve 1946?

Because of the late Dec '45 date on the jacket, I would lean toward
the Reserve Division, because any Occupation Forces would have
used up stores from an earlier date, seeing as their return date
    was 20 Dec '45.

The overseas cap has red piping, which I always believed
is Artillery ? Not sure on this.........

    Steve.

    Thank you again Steve!

I figured as much with the dating. Hopefully I can gain some more info researching the name on the dog tag.

Still very cool items. ( One other thing - there is no 'Ruptured Duck'
discharge insignia on it - if that means anything ! )

EM jackets like this were plentiful and cheap 15 to 20 years ago,
but like all other militaria today, they are climbing in price.
Any war dated material is worth a lot more than post-war
stuff - whether it saw overseas service or not.........!

Thank you for all of the information you've provided! At least with the dog tags and picture it will hopefully give me an opportunity to try and do some research.

I probably overpaid for the group but it was $120 including $16 for shipping. Probably a little steep for what it is but interesting nonetheless.

Here are a couple pictures of his notebook which appears to be from 1943:
