    hello, i saw this helmet on ebay and thought the weld spots and white stuff on the front looked interesting. i wanted to know what the stuff is on the front and if the weld was a repair in battle or later on. i know that the helmet is in terrible condition. thanks....

    Not a war repair no reason for that.
    We had millions of them.

    Strange repair...you would think that whoever did it would have run a second bead over the neighboring crack next to it as well! And maybe run a hand grinder or file over it to shave it down abit some. I suppose it's Possible to have been a field repair done by a mechanic or engineer, as it certainly looks crude enough, but as has been said, why bother? It isn't like they were hard to come by!

    Doubtful...it almost looks like body putty, like some sort of Bondo...

    Notice in the first picture how the steel seems to overlap itself. A messy job done, and I'm not sure how many field-weld sets were handy at the time... Welded over a severe stress crack, no doubt.

    Maybe a kid was learning how to weld by practicing on an old broken up helmet they had laying around? The quality of the weld sure Looks like it...
