Default Late war M1 with unknown unit marking...

Recently picked up what looks to be a late war M1.
    - McCord shell with heat stamp. it is not fully visible (a 3 or 9...then 0G)
    - Front seam.
    - Westinghouse liner 25.

It is more likely a Canadian surplus
    - sweatband dated '51
    - writing/identification numbers in liner. I read somewhere that was a common practice in the Canadian Forces.
    - Purchased in Canada.

Anyone know the unit marking on the exterior? I feel it is post war applied (jiffy marker)
Have people had success removing these marks?

    Regards,
