Default M1-C Rear Seam w/painted Insignia

Hi all, This is a late war rear seam M1-C with a Westinghouse rigger made a/b liner, all complete. When it arrived I was surprised by the hand rendered Skull and Crossed Bones insignia on the shell. The paratrooper must have been a bold dude! Anyway, I don't know the significance of the insignia. The 504th of the 82nd A/B used a skull insignia, but this does not look like that insignia. I know that Infantry troopers from the 2nd ID who completed Ranger training before D-Day were permitted to wear Skull and Crossed Bones patches on their sleeves, and I assume that applied to all US Army Infantry units, including the Airborne, so it may well be that this soldier had completed Ranger training. I am aware on at least one other M1-C with a similar Skull and Crossed Bones insignia hand painted on the front of the shell. Does anyone know for sure what the significance of these markings are? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Jim G.

The naive 'skull and bones' may or may not have had anything to do
with this helmet originally, and could have been drawn by a child.

It's a very nice helmet just the same...............!
