M1 Evaluation

Article about: It looks like one - but it is not. 'Talker' cups are elongated. ( Doesn't belong on the helmet anyway ! ) If it were me, I would give it a good bath.........

I just won this baby in an auction. Did I do good? What would have been a fair price?

It could just be the lighting, but the green color interior doesn't look WWII vintage to me... too light green in color. Is there a heat stamp?

I've just won the auction now, those are the photos provided.
Based on the photos what can you say? Even if it's post WWII, for 25 euros, it's a risk I'm willing to make.

EDIT - Yes, I know it's usually a good idea to evaluate items /before/ buying, but this one was 2 minutes away from ending when I came across it.

in my honest opinion i would not have touch this even for the price you paid the shell looks to be as already said post war & in very poor condition as for the chin strap Ive seen nothing like this before possibly of none US origin ??

Thanks for the opinions guys. Shame to hear that, though I don't feel too bad, at least I'll learn something if it's not a good helmet.

I'll dig into it's history once I have it in my hand, then see if I regret it or not.
I've seen that kind of chinstrap before, but for the love of me can't remember where.

I've checked every page about M1 style helmets that I can think of and can't find a matching chinstrap, though I'm sure I've seen a similar arrangement before.

Could it be a (highly unlikely) field mod? It looks like it's been put together like that a while.

The chin strap reminds me of the Naval Talker helmet version?

Nitram, you won't find this chincup on any American helmet from
any era - It does not belong on an M1.

There are some that look similar, as already suggested, on USN
'Talker' helmets, as well as paratrooper lids, but they are
quite different. You now have a 'clean-up project'
    ahead of you..........
    Regards,

    Steve.

Right you are gents! It does look like a "Talker" Helmet chinstrap: .: World War Helmets - Etats-Unis - Casque USN Mark II :.

How or why it ended up on an M1, we'll never know. I'm open to suggestions as to what I should do with it once it arrives.
