Default M1 Helmet chinstrap number help

Friends, I am trying to do a bit of research on a number on a helmet chinstrap - but am struggling to make out the last digit.

I originally thought it was J 3478, but the more I look at it I see 3479 or even 3473 ! What does everyone think?

Has anybody got another strap with examples of 8, 9 or 3 on?!

    Many thanks, Shaun

The letter and numbers are called the laundry mark and the list you have probably has your man on it but will be very difficult to narrow it down to just the one man.

Ok, we'll stick with the 8 for now, thanks gents.
This is probably a topic for another thread, but now I have 27 names that could be J3478 is there no way of finding out which division they served with from name, service number and residence?
I have just been through the list of dead and casualties from the US archives and found only one matching J3478 name in there. Any advice on where I can look next?
    Thanks as always, Shaun

To me, that is almost certainly a 9...
Notice how the top loop is bigger than the bottom? An 8 is generally the other way round (or equal, as in the forum font). There is a full curve to the right and an opening bottom left, with the ball serif clearly visible.

Incidentally, I hadn’t noticed this thread until now and have posted something about this very detail on the original ‘one that got away’ thread.

    Cheers,
    Bob

Just had another look... definitely a 9.

    Well, if it is a nine then the odds are shorter;

There is a bit more detail in my post in ‘the one that got away’, but Olin W. Johnson is looking good...
Born 1st March 1916, Died 2nd February 1985, Buried Fort Gibson National Cemetery, Oklahoma.
Served in US Army, as Tech-Sergeant (T-4).

Annoyingly, US (post-war) headstones rarely carry any detail of Regimental, or even Divisional, service, but the branch and rank do, at least, tally with this helmet.

    No guarantees yet though!
    I’ll keep rummaging.
