Talking My new M-1 turned up today

    hiya guys

ive been waiting for this M-1 to turn up since last week & it finally here & im not disappointed in anyway

this is another eBay buy it had gone round twice i guess no one else was interested & the first time round i dident have the money so the second time i see it i took a chance & went for it. it was on offer as a buy it now of $59.99 which was about 36.18 & including shipping came to just under 59 which to me was good. as you can see its a Korean war era lid with a WESTINGHOUSE liner, its had a hard life with a split up the front right where the front seam is, its a swivel bail with the straps just about hanging on & the metal work all rusted, it still has the original WW2 corking finish & is painted grey, theres no chance of a heat stamp as its to rusted in that area to see anything.

the liner is painted black with to my surprise the remains of some sort of decal ??????. the netting if original is not original the the helmet as it looks new & unused compared to the lid it self.

anyway guys there you go all opinions are welcome

Nice interesting late style buckle hardware with the quick release "hook" which is stitched on to the loops, most I've seen over the years have the metal clip at the top of the strap which attaches to the loop on the helmets bale.

BTW the stress crack can be repair quite easily should you wish to do so

some thing i forgot to add is that the right side portion of the chin strap has been attached the wrong way round so the metal work faces inwards & not out ????

Hi Nick, I keep looking at the decal and there is something familiar about it which I cannot bring to mind at present.

I can tell you that it is not a divisional/corps/army insignia. My feeling is that it is a unit distinctive insignia. These were at Regimental level and there are hundreds & hundreds of them! (If I am correct)

    Cheers, Ade.

I think some had a bad day at the factory , however with a Bartak machine it would be very easy to stitch the strap on the wrong way round, as the machine does the whole operation, as in fact all the operator does, is hold the helmet and strap in position under the foot of the sewing machine, and then presses the foot treadle, the machine actually automatically feeds the work from side to side itself as it stitches and locks off the thread when complete, semi automatic industrial models are quite common for specialised tasks, button hole machine for example work in a very similar fashion.
