Need Help to Identify a WWII US M1 Paint Scheme

Article about: It looks like it has been there for a very long time. There could be a variety of reasons why it was painted this way. I doubt that it was done postwar or for camouflage purposes.

    Thanks for the input so far guys... I purchased this helmet from my cousin who has a VERY extensive collection of both US and German militaria. He too has been baffled for years as to what this paint is all about....

    Hopefully, someone will stumble upon this thread and solve the mystery.
