That's true mate, and the thing is, if that helmet showed up today, it would be dismissed out of hand as messed with. Makes you think.

Maybe he had an injury... or during the Bulge he sourced a flak helmet to keep his ears warm...?

I wouldn't want to wear one of those as an infantry man! I wouldn't be able to hear properly!

A lot of them arrived there with no winter kit and it turned out to be one of the coldest winters in years, so perhaps the enterprising soldier took what he
could get, and yes perhaps to keep his ears warm, why not?
