I hope I'm wrong, but this badge appears to be refinished to me. Perhaps spray painted but maybe re-plated. I would check around the hinge/pin area for signs of wear, also where the pin fits under the catch, I would be concerned if the finish was not worn in those areas. It may be worth trying the acetone test to see if the finish dissolves.
