That is the Legion Condor one I believe, another category of WBs!

I dont think there are many books on this subject, there is a Germa language one that is soon to be published in English. The best source are these forums, you will soon learn alot about them

The following "generations" of Wound Badges existed:

    WW1:
    • Verwundetenabzeichen für die Armee und Kolonialtruppen [Wound Badge for the Army and the Colonial Troops]
    • Verwundetenabzeichen für die Marine [Wound Badge for the Navy]

    Spanish Civil War:
    • Verwundetenabzeichen für deutsche Freiwillige im spanischen Freiheitskampf 1936/39 [Wound Badge for German volunteers in the Spanish struggle for freedom 1936/39]

    WW2:
    • Verwundetenabzeichen [Wound Badge]
    • Verwundetenabzeichen des 20. Juli 1944 [Wound Badge of 20th July 1944]

The Spanish Civil War Wound Badge came only in two grades (black and silver); all other generations of the Wound Badge had three grades (black, silver and gold).
Under the 1957 regulations, the WW1-era and WW2-era Wound Badges could be worn (the latter in "de-nazified" form without the Swastika), but not the Spanish Civil War Wound Badge or the 20th July Wound Badge.

As for the various versions (massive, hollow, cut-out etc.) I would prefer to leave the answer to the more knowledgable members, as this is not my area of expertise.

I simply meant the opposite to "cut-out". (Sorry; I guess "massive" was a misleading term. Perhaps "solid" or "full" would be better?)

HPL pretty much summed it up. There are simply many
    variations of the wound badge.

It may take time, but it is very easy to see and learn all
the different types. Problems, confusion and concerns
should only arise when dealing with fakes...........!

Was there a cut out version of both ww1 and ww2 wounded badges ?

No, only the WWI and Spanish type are seen cut-out .

The difference is that the Spanish badge has
    the addition of a swastika..............
