    I know it is not a rare item but it is getting late...silver or gold?

    Actually I say silver....

    As a general rule of thumb, gold badges tend to still retain the plating on the pins, as these are not zinc but steel, sometimes unplated brass. I also believe this one's silver on that point as well as the fact that the obverse appearance is more a white silver hue than a buttery gold. The badge appears to be a Wachtler & Lange badge (100), as the rear set up is identical to mine. Note the similarities in the pic below compared to the gold (30) next to it.
