    Wow, I haven't yet seen a black with not a stitch of finish remaining! I wish there were a better picture of the hardware. It looks a lot like the hardware on my black badge. Mine also has no maker mark, as it appears this one doesn't.

    Well, some people believe that late war black badges were painted (they hadn't the resouces to plate by then) as gold badges due to supply issues, and I think this one shows clear paint residue. An unfinished badge would be a very different colour / appearance. Personally I think these are just black badges "pimped" for profit so the mug who went behind your back likely got what he deserved; a bloody duck egg
