    What's the maker on that Gold, Steve? Is it cased? Looks like a beaut! William

    It is a 'black grade' badge in tombac/brass. There is a rumor that some of these badges
    were used in place of gold ones later in the war as a matter of economy.

    I've always thought this, and have heard of two other sources that agree with
    the theory - one an SS Vet - but I can't prove it. There is no trace of black
    paint, and it looks like there never was.

    I bought it as a worn black badge, and it will fill in as a 'gold' until I can
    find/afford a genuine gold grade.........!
