    Its not a gold grade for sure, I am not convinced about the maker stamp I always thought it was arched.

    Wait for other opinions

    It's a standard black wound badge by Schauerte & Hohfeld, the tool marks look o.k. for it to be an original one that's been polished/stripped imo. I would imagine it is made of brass judging by the use of the small block hinge rather than the longer type used on the steel BWB's they made.

    Are there gold wound badges with a hollow back like this, or are they all solid types?

    Deschler made a hollow gold badge in zinc late on in the war, it's considered extremely rare, so yes, they're out there.

    Agreed - tombac/brass, black grade.

    Recently I had a fellow try to sell me a similar badge as
    a gold grade. He wouldn't believe that it was a black
    one without it's finish.........
