    Hi,

This is my pre-Christmas present (to myself) which I happened to spot on the internet earlier this month.

It needed a little TLC but has come up just fine. here is a step by step guide to the restoration.............

kind regards and happy xmas to all,

    Tony.

    Stage 1.

This is what I had to work with. It was described as a WW1 cap but the cap band colour and style is definitely post WW1. Although this was a little guess work based on the few pictures on the internet. Also the piping was described as red but looked a little dark on the photos to be poppy red for ww1 infantry.

When it turned up an initially nervous closer inspection showed it to be a Reichswehr cap 1920 pattern but with carmine piping making it either for wear by veterinary officers, Reichswehrministerium officers or Truppengeneralstabe.

The construction is also unique as it is a private purchase cap with leather peak and gold silk lining, the cap band is a flexible buckram giving the owner I guess the option to wear in the field as well as for formal uniform walking out dress. It was quite stained from storage and has some minor mothing but otherwise is in good order. Nice leather sweatband still supple is in place.
The insignia holes in the cap band show clearly where the cockade, wreath and reichsadler had been originally. Each side showed where the button for the chin strap had also been.

    Stage Two:

Cleaned the cap with a hand held steamer, cleaned up the leather work with a little bit of leather wax to give it some moisture and re-sprung the cap to get some shape back into it.

Add insignia...literally just pushed through the original holes and wreath plus reichsadler slotted straight in.

Tony, you have skipped apprentice and journeyman, and have gone straight to Master Craftsman...excellent work on a very rare cap!
